Born and raised in New York City: in both Queens & Manhattan. Is of Syrian Jewish (father) and Russian Jewish (mother) descent. He attended the school of Communication at Boston University. He often collaborates with his brother Benny Safdie. The brothers have both cited early experiences in front of their father's camera as the reasons for their pursuing filmmaking. Their father is not a filmmaker, though they are related to famed architect Moishe Safdie.
Listed on Filmmaker Magazine as one of the 25 new faces of independent film.
Came to notice after premiering his first two feature films in two consecutive years [2008 and 2009] at Cannes in the Director's Fortnight.
